How to explain that Rover is gone to your child?

Many of us who have owned pets before know when it's time to put our beloved pet to sleep. I've had three dogs, Beagle, Brownie, and Yogi that we put to sleep because of old age or Cancer. Even as a teenager it's so hard to say, "Yes, Doctor, it's time." But how do we explain to the children who interact with their cats and dogs on a daily bases? The truth is, it's never easy. One parent from San Antonio did find a way.

They told their daughter to write a letter to God and they placed a returned stamp envolope. This is what the four year old said:

"Dear God,

Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick. I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her

You will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.

Love, Meredith."

Weeks later a package was sent to Meredith. Inside was the book by Mr. Rogers called "When a Pet Dies" and there was a letter attached. The letter claimed,

"Dear Meredith,

Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away. Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.
Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you. I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I am wherever there is love. Love, God "

Even in the crazy, fast pace world of ours, it's always a nice reminder that there are kind people in this world. Now if you recently lost a dog, and your child/sibling/ cousin/etc is clearly upset, ask them to write a letter to God, nature, whatever you believe in and see what happens. Sometimes you'll get a response like
Meredih did, sometimes you won't. Also, being a huge Mr. Rogers fan myself, go buy "When a pet dies" and it will help you and your child begin the healing process.

Until Next time
