Last night I was watching interviews from survivors of September 11th on National Geographic. All of their accounts touched me and one particular experience really stayed on my mind. A blind worker was in the first tower, on the 72nd floor was inside the WTC when the plane hit. Everyone was trying to figure out whether to stay and wait for help or take the stairs to exit the building. This man noticed his guide dog making noises and acting anxious. At that very moment, he decided to leave. During the chaos in the stairwells, he let the dog loose so that others could exit or enter the tower faster. Also, if he did not survive, he wanted his dog to survive. He set his guide dog loose. The dog walked down a couple of stairs. When he noticed his owner was falling behind, the dog went back. The man said, “My dog was trying to say, I’m not going to leave you.”
Luckily the man survived. His dog was later put down due to respiratory illnesses that were caused from September 11th.
Even during times of tragedy, chaos, most pets will not leave our sides.
Now I’m not sure if the man who conducted the interview was Michael Hingson. I don’t remember the dog’s Guide Dog Saves Owner on September 11th.

Even though we were attacked ten years ago, that day will never be forgotten. We take our hats off to the survivors, victims, victims' families, FDNY and NYPD.
